Just call me Flash

Summer is in full force here in Georgia with temps in the high 90s to low 100s every day, with tropical high humidity. Afternoon thundershowers are a part of the weather forecast pretty much every day here during summer, and we’ve had our share. But, I’ve managed to get in a decent amount of training despite the conditions.

I’ve biked a good bit with the group on weekdays and have gotten in some longer rides on the weekends. My cycling is ok right now and I think the main thing I need to do is just stay consistent and keep it rolling.
My running has been hit and miss lately. No long runs to speak of. A few 7-8 milers, but that’s it. It’s mostly been short runs mixed in here and there when time allows. I have my first tri of the year coming up in a few weeks, so I need to get busy sharpening my running up a bit.
Swimming is going great. I started swimming with a local masters group a few weeks ago and I’m really enjoying it. I would have been swimming with them long before now, but I just found out about the program through a conversation with a fellow rider during a ride a few weeks back. My swimming program before starting masters consisted of…get in the pool…start swimming…swim for 30-60 minutes…stop swimming. Real complicated stuff. The masters program has plenty of structure and variety. Each session is about an hour long and the time flies by.

I also finally got around to ordering some new running shoes. I always…ALWAYS…wait too long to order shoes. You know you wait too long to order shoes when your current shoe is no longer being made, EVERY time you go to reorder. There’s no telling how many miles I had on the old ones (Asics GT-2120). The new ones are Asics GT-2130s. I’ll report back on how I like them compared to the old ones, which I love.

DJ is heading out of town today for a 5 day teacher’s workshop over on one of the barrier islands off the coast of Georgia. I think it’s just a ploy for them to get away for a long weekend. Training for me will be very limited while she’s gone. Me and KJ will have the house to ourselves for a few days. I’m really looking forward to spending some extra time with her. We’re actually planning to paint her room over the long weekend, so I definitely won’t be wasting away on the couch.

I’ll close with a funny (now), quite embarrassing, incident that happened at the pool this morning. I was first to finish the session and pulled myself up onto the deck to get out of the pool. Once out of the water, I lifted my right leg to put my foot on the deck to stand up. About halfway through the motion, I heard a faint ripping sound and suddenly felt a breeze in the gluteus maximus area of my body. OH SHIZNIT! was my first thought. WHAT THE *&^# AM I GONNA DO NOW, was my next thought. Not much I could do at that point but get on out of the pool. I put my pull buoy and kick board away right quick and scurried off to the locker room. All the while trying to holding the two rear halves of my suit together with one hand. I’m not sure if anyone noticed my wardrobe malfunction. I didn’t hang around to ask. I’m sure I’ll hear about it if they did.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Happy Training,
TJ

Your swimming mishap made me LOL! I also just bought some new running shoes. Asics 2130's. I hear they are the shiznik. Also, I guess it's best for ITBS prone people to always buy good running shoes.

A good reason to always have a towel nearby the pool ;-)

Good to hear you're doing a race soon!

Sounds like you need a new suit to go along with those new shoes!

I hope your new shoes work out for you.
My husband can't understand why I have sooooo many pairs of running shoes; really it's only 3. I don't think that's so bad!

Hilarious! I noticed recently as I walked by the mirror in the locker room after a swim that my suit was VERY worn out in the bum area and may as well have been ripped open. Eek! Oh well I think swimmers have seen it all.

Keep up the good work!!

Ouch, that stinks! If everyone doesn't know by now I might have to tell them. Just kidding. I think the worst part is having to order a new suit. I just ordered me a new swim suit & new shoes last Sunday. My old suit was getting to be a bit see through. Hopeful I’ll see you in the pool on Friday.

Well as long as noone said anything or laughed so that you could hear it, I'm sure you got away with the malfunction! :) Anxious to hear how you like the shoes. If I find a pair I like, I'll buy 2 just so that I'm not scurrying to replace the ones I love!
